The JCHS Research Library and Archives, located in the Heritage Center building, is a “state-of-the-art” user friendly facility that makes available to researchers and visitors our extensive collections of documents, maps, photographs, books, and other resources. Most collections have been computer cataloged for easy reference, and volunteer staff members are available to assist in locating research materials. A computer terminal with internet access is also available without charge for the convenience of researchers.
Our collections provide a wealth of useful Jefferson County information for research on genealogy, land ownership, house history, Civil War, railroad history, Madison history, and many other subjects. Tuesday, Wednesday & Thursday: 10:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m. (hours may vary depending on availability of volunteer staff)

There is a $5.00 fee for use of the Research Library and a $1.00 per page fee for photocopies or digital copies.
How to Request Copies by mail or e-mail:
If you cannot visit the Research Library in person, copies of material listed in our genealogy indexes can be obtained by U.S. Mail or in digital form via return e-mail .
The fees for obtaining material from the Family History Files, the Fauna Mihalko Genealogy Collection, and the Madison Death Records Collection are: a $15.00 research fee, plus a $1.00 per page copy fee, plus a $5.00 postage and handling fee. Records are only sent upon receipt of payment.
Copies can be obtained by mailing your request along with a check, money order, or credit card number to the Jefferson County Historical Society, 615 W. First St., Madison, IN 47250. Please address it to the attention of the Research Library.
